Título

Length of stay and postoperative outcomes in Brazilian adults with CNS malignant neoplasms: preliminary results from TROMBOGLIO study

Objetivo

We assessed the association between length of stay, demographic and clinical variables. Additionally, we analyzed whether the length of stay influence postoperative outcomes in 149 adults with CNS malignant neoplasms.

Métodos

We conducted a cohort study based on data collection from medical records. We performed Spearman’s correlation, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskall-Wallis tests. Length of stay was dichotomized (< 7 or ≥ 7 days) for obtaining odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (95%CI).

Resultados

The patients were middle-aged (49.7yr [SD=17.1]), predominantly males (n=89; 60%). Although median length of postoperative hospital stay (6 days [1-111]) did not correlate with tumor-related variables and duration of prophylaxis, it positively correlated with age (r=0.24; p=0.010). Having a thrombotic/hemorrhagic event increased less than a day in the length of stay (p=0.353). Patients who experienced readmission due to thrombotic/hemorrhagic events showed a higher median length of stay (11 days [3–35]) compared to those who were not readmitted (5.5 days [4–11]) (p=0.094). The median length of stay (8 days [3-33]) for patients who died was higher compared to those who survived (6 days [1-111], p=0.221). A length of stay ≥ 7 days did not associate with having thrombotic/hemorrhagic event (OR=1.24; 95%CI 0.44–3.51) or death (OR=1.37; 95%CI 0.56–3.36).

Conclusão

A longer length of stay was associated with an increased likelihood of readmission due to thrombotic/hemorrhagic event. Although not statistically significant, patients who stayed in the hospital for ≥ 7 days had a 24% and 37% higher likelihood of experiencing a thrombotic/hemorrhagic event and death, respectively.
