Título

Clinical-epidemiological profile of patients admitted to an Intensive Care Center in northeast Brazil.

Objetivo

To describe the clinical-epidemiological profile of patients admitted to an Intensive Care Center in Brazil

Métodos

Cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary hospital in northeast Brazil that included adult patients admitted to a general Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The center had, during the one year-long (2023) study period, 34 beds. Variables age, sex, comorbidities, Charlson comorbidities index, type of admission (clinical or surgical), intensive care support at admission, (mechanical ventilation (MV), renal substitutive therapy (RST), vasoactive support), hospital length-of-stay, SAPS 3 score and standardized mortality rate (SMR) were collected. All patients were followed until hospital discharge or death. Statistical analysis of the collected data was carried out using descriptive statistics with categorical variables being reported as counts and percentages, and continuous variables as means with standard deviations or medians with interquartile ranges.

Resultados

We included 2796 patients. The mean age was 71.31 (±18.36) years, with a predominance of females (n=1513; 54.11%). The most prevalent comorbidities were hypertension (1754, 62.73%), diabetes (530, 18.96%) and demencial syndromes (502, 17.95%). Charlson comorbidities index mean was 2.39 (±2.34); most frequent ICU type of admission was clinical (2091, 74.79%). On admission, patients needed MV, RST and vasopressors in 285 (10.19%), 141 (5.04%) and 447 (15.99%), respectively. The mean SAPS 3 score was 48.07±15.06 and SMR was 0.66 (with an expected rate of 0.58-0.74 CI 95%). Death was recorded in 239 (8.48%) of patients.

Conclusão

An adequate knowledge of the profile of patients admitted to ICU can contribute to better outcomes and team logistics planning.
